Rock and roll icon and musical genius, Prince, may have sung the praises of purple bananas, little red corvettes, pearls, but in a revealing interview in this week’s New Yorker magazine, he exposes a side of himself that fans might find more than a little surprising: He is against gay marriage.
A devout Jehovah’s Witness, his Purple Highness explained his political beliefs to the interviewer this way:
“Here’s how it is: you’ve got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this.” He pointed to a Bible. “But there’s the problem of interpretation, and you’ve got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn’t. And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you’ve got blue, you’ve got the Democrats, and they’re, like, ‘You can do whatever you want.’ Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right.”
Prince has already lost one fan in celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton, and we assume more are to follow.
But the rocker is no stranger to controversy, famously ditching the use of his own name to protest the evils of the music industry, writing ‘slave’ on his face – even penning the hit song “Controversy” back in the early ’80s.
Will this be another storm he can weather?
Only time will tell if fans will be able to stand by their purple prince now that they know more about his prickly principals. In the meantime we’re sure many will be hanging up their raspberry berets until he has a change of heart.
