Couture jewelry and high fashion are nearly as important as the cinema itself as all eyes turn to the south of France for the 62nd annual Cannes Film Festival this week.
Swiss watchmaker and high-end jeweler, Chopard, has been a partnering sponsor for the event since 1997 when they were asked to redesign the Golden Palm Award (the equivalent of our Oscar statue). The Palm D’or – as they say across the pond – is created out of 24-carat gold, hand cast into a wax mold and attached to a single piece of cushion-cut crystal. The prize is then given to the director of the best feature from the Official Competition, with past winners including luminaries like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorcese and Quentin Tarrantino.
But Chopard doesn’t stop there. This year they are creating 62 couture jewelry pieces in honor of the festival’s 62nd year to be worn throughout the event by the lucky celebrities, models and socialites who flock to the Croisette for each glittering premiere. And the competition has already featured some stunning red carpet moments, with Chopard’s co-president, Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele, wearing their huge sapphire and diamond couture necklace to Pixar’s “Up” premiere; and model, Eugenia Silva, donning their dazzling diamond and pearl statement piece. And that’s only the beginning.
